5 Reasons Why Your Gut and Immune System Is Like A Bucket
"But, I've been so healthy" "Where did this migraine / IBS / joint pain / fibromyalgia come from?"
"What happened to me?"
Ever say that or hear it?
There are 4 big things that affect our immune system. And we know that approximately 80% of our immune system is in the gut...
2. Illness (think viruses, bacterial)
4. Lack of sleep
Our immune system is there to protect you from illnesses and also has to deal with stress, antibiotics, and more. It has a big job to do.
So let's think about the immune system like a bucket. Think about these 4 things filling that bucket.
Take that empty bucket. Fill it up a little with lack of sleep, throw in a food allergy...maybe you're half full now.
Plus an illness and maybe an antibiotic, that can fill that bucket up to the top, overflow it.
Remember, 80% of our immune system is in the gut.
What comes in closer contact with the gut than #5, foods we eat (aka your diet)?
So, when that bucket is full, and if you're eating things that are causing an inflammatory reaction to you, it can make that bucket flow over.
When it flows over, that's when you can start having the symptoms associated with IBS, Migraine, Fibromyalgia, etc. There's only so much that your immune system, gut can handle.
So what's next?
Drain that bucket!
Remember that the immune system is 80% in the gut.
If you drain the foods that you're having an inflammatory reaction to (stop eating them) then that can drain the bucket. It won't be so high, so full.
When this happens, it will help these symptoms (by reducing inflammation ) of whatever you have, calm the gut and many people notice they can handle those other stressors better.
IBS, Migraine and Fibromyalgia are 3 conditions that benefit greatly from calming the gut through food.
Let's use migraine as an example. Someone gets migraines, barometric pressure can impact this. If the bucket is drained, they still may get a migraine due to a change in barometric pressure, but if that inflammation is reduced (bucket is drained), then they can handle that migraine better. Maybe needing an over-the-counter med instead of a prescription.
We are learning more and more about the gut and it's role in so many conditions. Our gut health is so important for our overall health.
